My ID Has My Social Security Number on it!

One of the easiest ways to obtain a person’s personal information is through their social security number. Have you checked your driver’s license lately? Some state driver’s licenses’ and ID cards contain social security numbers. Check yours and make sure that it does not. This could be critical in preventing yourself from becoming a victim in identity theft.

Let’s think about it for a minute…

How many people have held, viewed, or even had a photocopy of it? I’m sure you have made a purchase with a debit card, credit card, or even a check when the cashier asked to see some ID. Or how about showing an individual your card to obtain access into a club, bar, or some other form of a social gathering? Don’t forget about past employment places where they are required to have picture ID on file. Those records are kept on file for years! Who knows who has access to those files!

In December of 2005 a federal law took affect to ban social security numbers from being printed on ID cards; however, how many of those ID cards still have social security numbers on them and do not expire for years? With identity theft becoming so common now, many could easily become a victim if that information is easily obtainable.

Check your driver’s license and ID cards! It might save you a lot of heartache and trouble in the long run.
